Chapel of Bones
One of the most well-known monuments in the city of Évora, the Chapel of Bones is located in the Church of São Francisco.
The chapel was built in the 17th century by three Franciscan friars who wanted to prod their fellow brothers and community into contemplation and transmit the message of life being transitory. Upon entering the chapel, you can observe the following warning: "We bones that here are, for yours await".
Built in an old dormitory, the Chapel of Bones is composed of 3 naves coated with skulls and bones. Although the structure of the naves contains a few cracks that allow natural lighting, the chapel is a very dark and frightening place. But do not be afraid! The beauty and eccentricity of this space will take your breath away.
