Guimarães

The medieval city of Guimarães, founded in the 10th century, played a crucial role in the development of Portugal as a country. It was here that Count Don Henrique established the Condado Portucalense, and it was also here, in this little corner, that Don Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal was born. In the year 1128, Guimarães became the capital Portucalense County after Don Afonso Henriques turned out victorious in the Battle of São Mamede.
