The medieval city of Guimarães, founded in the 10th century, played a crucial role in the development of Portugal as a country. It was here that Count Don Henrique established the Condado Portucalense, and it was also here, in this little corner, that Don Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal was born. In the year 1128, Guimarães became the capital of Portugal after Don Afonso Henriques turned out victorious in the Battle of São Mamede.
The city of Guimarães is full of monuments and historic squares. Central Square – Guimarães’ “living room – is one of those squares. In it we find the Church of St. Peter, in Neoclassical style, built between 1737 and 1884. It is a very pleasant place and full of light.
